Prototyping,Small batch and low volume production


Prototypes are usually needed for products that have just been developed or designed. Prototyping is the first step to verify the feasibility of the product. It is the most direct and effective way to find out the defects, deficiencies, and drawbacks of the designed product, so as to improve the defects. Until you can't find the deficiencies in individual prototype samples. At this point, it is usually necessary to conduct a small batch trial production to find out the shortcomings in the batch and improve it. The designed products are generally not perfect, or even unusable. If they are directly produced, they will all be scrapped, which greatly wastes manpower and material resources and time; and the prototype is generally a small number of samples, the production cycle is short, and the manpower and material resources are consumed. Quickly find out the shortcomings of product design and improve it, providing sufficient basis for product finalization and mass production.


Prototype classification

According to production method

Prototypes can be divided into manual and numerical control prototypes according to the production methods:

(1) Manual prototype: The main workload is done by hand. Hand-made hand-board is divided into abs hand-board and clay hand-board


(2) CNC prototype: The main workload is completed by CNC machine tools, and according to the different equipment used, it can be divided into laser rapid prototyping (sla) prototype and machining center (CNC) prototype and RP prototype 3D printing.

A: RP prototype: It is mainly produced by 3D printing technology. The prototype made by laser rapid prototyping is commonly called sla prototype, but laser rapid prototyping is one of the 3D printing.
B: CNC prototype: mainly produced by machining center.
RP prototypes have their own advantages compared with CNC prototypes:
The advantages of RP prototypes are mainly manifested in its rapidity, but it is mainly formed by accumulation technology, so RP prototypes are generally relatively rough, and there are certain requirements for the wall thickness of the product, for example, the wall thickness is too thin to be produced.
The advantage of CNC prototype is that it can accurately reflect the information expressed in the drawings, and the surface quality of CNC prototype is high, especially after the surface spraying and silk printing are completed, it is even more brilliant than the product produced after the mold is opened. Therefore, CNC prototype manufacturing has increasingly become the mainstream of prototype manufacturing. 


According to the materials used

According to the materials used in production, prototypes can be divided into plastic prototypes, silicone prototypes, and metal prototypes:

(1) Plastic prototype: The raw material is plastic, mainly the prototype of some plastic products, such as televisions, monitors, telephones, etc.


(2) Silicone prototype: Its raw material is silicone, which is mainly used to display product design and appearance, such as cars, mobile phones, toys, handicrafts, daily necessities, etc.

(3) Metal prototypes: The raw materials are aluminum-magnesium alloys and other metal materials, mainly for high-end products, such as notebook computers, high-end single players, MP3 players, CD players, etc.


The necessity of prototype production

1.Design inspection

The prototype is not only visible, but also touchable. It can intuitively reflect the designer's creativity in the form of physical objects, avoiding the disadvantage of "drawing to look good but not making it good". Therefore, prototype production is indispensable in the process of new product development and product shape deliberation.

2.Check structure design

Because the prototype is assembleable, it can intuitively reflect the reasonableness of the structure and the ease of installation. It is convenient to find and solve problems early.

3.Avoid Risk of direct mold opening

Because the cost of mold manufacturing is generally very high, relatively large molds are worth hundreds of thousands or even millions. If unreasonable structure or other problems are found in the process of opening the mold, the loss can be imagined. Prototype production can avoid this loss and reduce the risk of mold opening.

4.Product launch ahead of schedule

Due to the advanced nature of prototype production, you can use the prototype for product promotion before the mold is developed, and even pre-sales and production preparations to occupy the market as soon as possible.
